Connect dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, salinity, and nitrogen measurements to pond observations.
A measurement needs context
A single number is a snapshot. A consistent series shows direction and rate of change. Record the pond, time, sampling location, depth, weather, instrument, and operator with each result.
Follow the daily cycle
Dissolved oxygen and pH can vary during the day as photosynthesis and respiration change. Measurements from different times are not directly comparable. Use the farm's approved schedule, including its locally important low-oxygen period, and compare like with like.
Check before reacting
Confirm that the instrument is within calibration, the probe is clean, and the sample represents the intended part of the pond. Repeat an unexpected result and compare it with animal behaviour and equipment status.
Interpret parameters together
Temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and nitrite interact. For example, the toxic un-ionised share of total ammonia rises as pH and temperature rise. Do not apply a universal threshold without considering species, life stage, system, and the farm's operating plan.
Escalate the pattern
Report the value, the recent trend, and operational changes such as feeding, rainfall, water exchange, algal condition, biomass, or aeration. Follow the site response plan for results outside its limits. When animals are distressed, prioritize the emergency procedure and responsible manager rather than experimenting with several changes at once.
